Welcome to the 2nd Annual Golden Dewback Awards where we pick the best and worst of the year for Hasbro 3 and 3/4 inch figures!
If interested you can check out last year's awards here.
A quick note about determining the winner for each category: There are six members of DewbackPatrol that will vote.
-
For each "Best" vote an item will receive 2 points
- For each "Runner-Up" vote an item will receive 1 point
- For an honorable mention an item will receive 0.5 points
- If anyone votes for more than one item in a category I will split the points (example: someone votes for Ackbar and Woof as their top figure, each will get 1 point instead of 2)
Hey, if it's worth bringing up I believe it should get something. The toy with the most points wins the category.
Easy enough, let's start with...
Best Vintage Wave:
ROZWELL: The Return of the Jedi Wave. With figures like Admiral Ackbar, Woof, Gamorrean Guard, and the Rebel Commando, this wave was a no-brainer! Amazing sculpts and great character choices made it a hit. The holiday release date also made this wave my number one hunt of the year (and finding it was a rush).
EMPIRE1980: Return of the Jedi
INQUISITOR GLOKTA: Let’s face the facts: If you’ve been collecting for any length of time the ROTJ wave is far better than the other two waves.
DEWBACKHUNTER: Return of the Jedi
VADERSFIST: The ROTJ wave
REDLEADER76: Jedi
Runner-up:
ROZWELL: The Empire Strikes Back Wave. This was the first Vintage line to be released. While I was not overwhelmed with its awesomeness, figures like the AT-AT Commander, Cloud Car Pilot, and an actual new Han Solo made this a solid wave. And, with its only competition the ROTS wave, this was easily the best of the two.
EMPIRE1980: Empire Strikes Back
INQUISITOR GLOKTA: The other two. They both had solid figures in them but nothing that stands out.
DEWBACKHUNTER: The Empire Strikes Back
VADERSFIST: ?
REDLEADER76: Hoth [AKA Empire]
There were only 3 Vintage waves this year but the winner by unanimous vote is...
Winner: The Return of the Jedi Wave

Best Vintage Figure:
ROZWELL: Wooof. My love of skiff gaurds was also evident in last year's vote. I just can't pass up these guys and this was a much needed vintage update. I think it's due to that ROTJ nostolgia from my childhood. ROTJ was probably the height of my SW collecting.
EMPIRE1980: Gamorrean Guard
INQUISITOR GLOKTA: This is a hard one. Hasbro did a great job with a lot of these figures……but if I had to hypothetically pick only one: Jedi Luke.
DEWBACKHUNTER: Wooof
VADERSFIST: Gamorrean Guard....Now I have an accurate pigman for my POTF Rancor to eat
REDLEADER76: R2
Runner-up:
ROZWELL: Gamorrean Guard. What an amazing sculpt and three weapons! This figure is supurb. It's a shame the puffy skirt kept it from the number one spot for me. Admiral Ackbar also deserves a mention as he was a very close third with that incredible sculpt. Another option was the beardless Hoth Trooper from the Defense of Hoth battlepack - a holdout from last year this figure was an excellent addition to my Hoth battle diorama.
EMPIRE1980: Admiral Ackbar
INQUISITOR GLOKTA: Dengar. He’s not exciting because we already have too many other version of this second rate bounty hunter…but he’s near perfection.
DEWBACKHUNTER: Gamorrean Guard
VADERSFIST: Wooof...what can I say I have a thing for the ROTJ wave
REDLEADER76: Dengar would have been mine but the current R2- seems to have just about every function for most any movie- I was really happy with this figure.
So what did we learn this year? Rozwell and DewbackHunter were in exact agreement in this category and RedLeader76 has a strange R2 fetish. The winner in a very close vote with Wooof as the runner-up is...
Winner: Gamorrean Gaurd
|
Best Clone Wars Figure:
ROZWELL: Pre Vizsla was an excellent figure. Even though I don't collect the Clone Wars this was probably my son's top played with CW figure.
EMPIRE1980: Embo
INQUISITOR GLOKTA: Soooo….many great figures. I’m going to go with Pre Vizla. That’s one of the best figures EVER! The character on the show leaves a little bit to be desired, but the figure is awesome.
DEWBACKHUNTER: Embo
VADERSFIST: not really into the Clone Wars Stuff...but i do look at them...I have to Say the Mandie Gaurd
REDLEADER76: NONE
Runner-up:
ROZWELL: Young Boba Fett (carded release). I'm not sure if it's because I just read the young Boba Fett tales with my son or because we just watched the young Fett CW episodes but this figure was much anticipated in my home (and it turned out better than the "realistic" version).
EMPIRE1980: Shaak Ti
INQUISITOR GLOKTA: Aurra Sing or Embo. Both are superb.
DEWBACKHUNTER: Aurra Sing
VADERSFIST: ?
REDLEADER76: none
Runner-up was Pre Vizsla but the winner by a half a point is...
Winner: Embo

Best Vehicle:
ROZWELL: The freakin AT-AT! How could anyone not choose the amazing, huge, awesome AT-AT. From my first viewing of this in person at Toy Fair I couldn't wait to get this monster. And, getting 2 for 50 bucks each at Kmart was just icing on the cake. Christmas morning was a blast! Thank you Hasbro for the AT-AT (now give me a Sail Barge and all will be right with the world).
EMPIRE1980: AT-AT
INQUISITOR GLOKTA: Come On! The AT-AT.
DEWBACKHUNTER: Slave 1
VADERSFIST: Its a toss up between the AT-At and the Cloud car ( i dont have either but i still like them)
REDLEADER76: AT-AT
Runner-up:
ROZWELL: The Bespin Cloud Car. Ah, the vehicle Hasbro said that they would never make in the modern line and here it is. I was suprisingly excited when I opened up this baby!
EMPIRE1980: Cloud Car
INQUISITOR GLOKTA: Did they release anything besides the AT-AT?
DEWBACKHUNTER: AT-AT
VADERSFIST: still a toss up between the two
REDLEADER76: Cloud Car
Despite a lonely vote cast for the Slave I by DewbackHunter and a slightly too excited reaction to the Cloud Car by Rozwell, the clear winner here [and deservingly so] is...
Winner: The AT-AT

Best Battle Pack:
ROZWELL: Defense of Hoth (Target exclusive). Not a traditional battlepack but still an awesome one that contained the long awaited and perfect beardless Hoth Rebel Trooper.
EMPIRE1980: Defense on Hoth
INQUISITOR GLOKTA: Arc Troopers. They may not have been anything I would have missed if they never made it but it was four solid figures in one shot. No “Gimli’s” in that pack.
DEWBACKHUNTER: defense of hoth
VADERSFIST: ?
REDLEADER76: Defense of Hoth Battlepack(Target exclusive)
Runner-up:
ROZWELL: Attack on Hoth (Target)
EMPIRE1980: Attack on Hoth
INQUISITOR GLOKTA: Target exclusive Robinino, Weequay Bounty Hunter, 2 commando droids [Hostage Crisis]. Another great value. Almost on par with the Arc Troopers pack.
DEWBACKHUNTER: attack on hoth
VADERSFIST: ?
REDLEADER76: Defense of Hoth Battlepack(Target exclusive)
Inquisitor Glokta has proven to be out of touch in this category with two battlepacks that no one else voted for. What were you thinking IG? The winner for just about everyone else was the awesome Target exclusive...
Winner: Defense of Hoth Battlepack
|
Best Exclusive:
ROZWELL: Jabba's Throne Battlepack (Walmart) - a much needed update of Jabba that works very well in dioramas.
EMPIRE1980: Boba Fett (Vintage Rocket-Firing Mail-away)
INQUISITOR GLOKTA: Cami and Fixer pack. NO Wait! Those sucked…….BORING. I say: CW Nahdar Vebb (Mailaway). That is a really nice figure at the right price.
DEWBACKHUNTER: zuckuss and 4 LOM
VADERSFIST: 4-LOM and Zuckuss I loves me the bounty hunters
REDLEADER76: Boba Fett (Vintage Rocket-Firing Mailaway)
Runner-up:
ROZWELL: TIE: 4-LOM and Zuckuss (Bounty Hunters Convention 2-Pack) and Boba Fett (Vintage Rocket-Firing Mailaway)
EMPIRE1980: Jabba's Throne Battlepack
INQUISITOR GLOKTA: All the EE comic packs except for the imperial dude with the goatee and rebel pilot helmet, and the chick with the red uniform. I would rather have Cami and Fixer’s brother and sister.
DEWBACKHUNTER: Jabbas Throne
VADERSFIST: Jabba playset ( I would say this is the best but i cant friggin find one)
REDLEADER76: ?
In the second category so far, IG again proved to be a loner providing the sole votes for Nahdar Vebb (which my 7 year son did think was awesome) and the OK EE exclusive comic packs. Is he a Rebel or out of touch? Perhaps he likes strange pinkish-skinned women. Although Jabba's Throne Room only received 1 top vote, it pulled through with 3 runner-up votes passing the awesome Boba Fett mail-away by only 0.5 points.
Winner: Jabba's Throne Room
|
Best Repack:
ROZWELL: Battle Droid 2-packs. I could always use a couple extra battle droids for dioramas and with two in a pack it feels like I'm not getting ripped off.
EMPIRE1980: Snow Trooper
INQUISITOR GLOKTA: I really don’t care.
DEWBACKHUNTER: Boussh
VADERSFIST: Im not liking of the repacks
REDLEADER76: IG-88 I just like the figure
No winner in this category except perhaps not having repacks in the line at all!
Winner: None, we do not like repacks!
|
Biggest Surprise:
ROZWELL: Getting the Cloud Car after all the years of being told it would never happen.
EMPIRE1980: Attack on Hoth set. Didn't want another AT-ST but was blown away when I saw it. I went from skip to must buy.
INQUISITOR GLOKTA: Dewback Hunters’s having a baby! ……or do you mean the toy line. I guess the FACT that the clone wars line is way better than the Vintage line and I would rather have Hasbro concentrate on the animated line only for now.
DEWBACKHUNTER: luke death star II confrontation
VADERSFIST: Admiral "ITS A TRAP"Ackbar...he looks really good
REDLEADER76: ?
In this category we have a blasphemous vote for the CW line over the Vinatge line (shame on you IG!) and a vote for Admiral Ackbar because "he looks really good". Hmmm, that can be taken a couple different ways...
Winner: No clear winner
|
Biggest Disappointment:
ROZWELL: The lack of any new, never before produced figures to add to my collection. Also, only 3 vintage waves for the entire year! And, too many non-generic army builders: mustache Cloud Car Pilot and bearded Endor Trooper
EMPIRE1980: The amount of repacks in the Vintage line.
INQUISITOR GLOKTA: Besides the Clone Wars Season Three timeline debacle? I would of rather had the hoth trooper variant come in a single pack rather than a large exclusive battlepack.
DEWBACKHUNTER: mandolorian guard from the clone wars
VADERSFIST: ?
REDLEADER76: DEAD tie for me- Cloud Car Pilot & Camie & Fixer (Celebration 5)
Again there was no clear loser in this category. One pattern does seem to emerge: the Cloud Car Pilot is not very well liked for a variety of reasons.
Loser: No clear loser
|
Worst Vintage Figure:
ROZWELL: The ROTS clone trooper with yellowing head was a disgusting figure. It made me sick to see this discolored piece of crap on the shelves. The sculpt and articulation are great but the yellow head (UGH). C-3PO is a close second - he just doesn't look right.
EMPIRE1980: C-3PO
INQUISITOR GLOKTA: Han Solo Echo Base outfit. Nice concept. Poorly executed.
DEWBACKHUNTER: cloud car pilot
VADERSFIST: C3P0 he looks crappy ...sorry
REDLEADER76: Cloud Car Pilot
And we have a loser! The mustached / policeman / 70's porn star Cloud Car Pilot was tough to beat but the there was no denying the stink of Vintage C-3PO. Worst of all was that his potential to be a good figure was there but what we ended up with was crap! Oh, and another lone vote by IG for Han Solo Echo Base.
Loser: C-3PO

|
Worst Clone Wars Figure:
ROZWELL: I didn't notice any really bad figures. The Mandalorian Police Officer seemed to be a peg warmer and he was rather boring so I will vote for him.
EMPIRE1980: Ki-Adi-Mundi
INQUISITOR GLOKTA: Mandalorian Police Officer. The lack of articulation makes this uninteresting figure even more useless.
DEWBACKHUNTER: mandolorian guard
VADERSFIST: ?
REDLEADER76: All! [HA! - Rozwell]
The Mando Police Officer which was chosen by Vadersfist as the BEST CW figure was the clear loser here. I would also like to point out that IG and RedLeader are at opposite ends of the collecting spectrum as IG thinks the CW line is god's gift to SW collecting and RedLeader thinks it's crap! A little inside info - these two have been SW collecting friends since childhood...that should make for some good dinner conversations! "Cad Bane's the coolest bounty hunter", "No, Boba Fett is", "No, Cad Bane",...
Loser:The Mandalorian Police Officer

|
Worst Vehicle:
ROZWELL: None I could think of were that aweful.
EMPIRE1980: Clone Swamp Speeder
INQUISITOR GLOKTA: I hate to say it…..but it’s true. The Cloud Car. It’s not exciting and it doesn’t represent any real faction (rebel, imperial, republic, separatist). It’s a well done piece of OT plastic, but completely un-necessary.
DEWBACKHUNTER: mace windu's fighter from the slave 1 pack
VADERSFIST: ?
REDLEADER76: clone stuff ;)
Another category with no consensus. Worst of all is a lone vote again from IG for the Cloud Car as the WORST vehicle. This is clearly at odds with everyone else who voted it as best runner-up vehicle. Shame, shame, shame on IG!
Loser: No clear loser
|
Worst Battle Pack:
ROZWELL: Hoth Assault. Another Vader and another Hoth speeder that wasn't even in the movie. I could come up with a much better Hoth battlepack but I guess Hasbro kind of did already with the Target exclusives.
EMPIRE1980: Battle of Orto Plutonia
INQUISITOR GLOKTA: Hoth Assualt. I guess it make sense for newbies, but I never even gave it a glance.
DEWBACKHUNTER: no opinion
VADERSFIST: ?
REDLEADER76: Jabba's Throne Battlepack (Walmart)
The repacks in the Hoth Assault battlepack helped it to win the worst of the worst. Congratulations Hoth Assault, you suck!
Loser: Hoth Assault Battlepack
|
Worst News out of Hasbro:
ROZWELL: Their refusal to make a Sail Barge because it's not action-oriented enough. I hope they change their mind on this like they did the Cloud Car. Let's face it, add a few guns and some action features and you have the perfect kid-friendly large scale vehicle.
EMPIRE1980: Slave 1 will be in Clone Wars paint scheme
INQUISITOR GLOKTA: ?......I have no idea. I’ve been happy with the choices they’ve made. I may not buy everything but they still put out a buttload of figures each year that I’m really happy with.
DEWBACKHUNTER: no opinion
VADERSFIST: ?
REDLEADER76: No to just troop builder battle packs
No clear stand-out in this category.
Worst News: No clear loser
|
Most looking forward to in 2011:
ROZWELL: Some of the kick-ass figures that have been announced - Weequay Skiff Guard, Evazan, Ponda Baba
, Bom Vimdin, and Rebel Blockade Trooper are all top wanted figures for me. I also can't wait to find out what the large size vehicle for the year is although my expectations are a bit low due to it being CW based.
EMPIRE1980: Finding out what the "Big Vehicle" of the year is
INQUISITOR GLOKTA: Legally changing my name to Shimmy Dong.
DEWBACKHUNTER: Bom Vimdin
VADERSFIST: don't know yet
REDLEADER76: Rebel Fleet Troopers
Due to lack of news on the SW line as of this writing, voting was spread in this category. The figure votes are probably due to the recent (at least as of the voting) release of the Toyfare images. Perhaps if the "big vehicle" was known, more excitement would have been generated around it as it was last year for the big AT-AT. As of this writing, the CW Shuttle and possibly a big sandcrawler for next year have been in the rumormill.
Winner: No clear winner

Hope you enjoyed the choices for best and worst from the best group of SW buddies this side of the east coast! Apologies for the indecisiveness in some categories. These are The Golden Dewback Awards.
